The South

Southern Namibia is a region of enormous scale and powerful contrasts. The Fish River Canyon cuts through an ancient, sun-baked plateau; the Orange River brings a ribbon of life to the southern border; Lüderitz preserves a colourful Atlantic character; and the abandoned mining town of Kolmanskop is slowly being reclaimed by sand. Between these landmarks lie gravel plains, quiver-tree country, wild horses and some of the quietest roads in the country.

This is not a region to squeeze into spare days. Distances are long, fuel stops are widely spaced and the pleasure comes from linking several distinct places into a coherent journey. Travellers who allow enough time are rewarded with uncrowded viewpoints, compelling history and landscapes that feel genuinely remote.

Highlights of southern Namibia

  • Fish River Canyon: admire one of Africa’s great canyon systems from viewpoints near Hobas and enjoy the desert scenery around Ai-Ais.
  • Lüderitz and Kolmanskop: combine coastal architecture, maritime history and the haunting interiors of a former diamond town.
  • Wild horses of the Namib: look for these remarkable animals around Garub while remembering that sightings are never guaranteed.
  • Quiver-tree landscapes: photograph sculptural aloes and granite formations in the golden light.
  • Orange River: add canoeing, rafting or a restful riverside stop to a road journey.

How much time do you need?

Allow at least four or five nights for a meaningful circuit, and longer if you are driving from Windhoek and returning north. A typical route may combine the Kalahari, Fish River Canyon, Lüderitz and the Namib Desert. Trying to connect these places in too few days leads to repeated long drives and little time outside the vehicle.

Seasons and access

April to October generally brings comfortable daytime temperatures, with cold winter nights. Summer can be intensely hot inland, especially around the canyon. The multi-day Fish River Canyon hiking trail is seasonal and requires advance planning, fitness and the relevant medical and park requirements. Casual visitors can enjoy the viewpoints without undertaking the hike.

Where to stay and how to plan

Accommodation ranges from canyon lodges and characterful roadhouses to coastal hotels, desert camps and riverside retreats. Choose properties that break the route into manageable stages and check whether dinner must be reserved, as alternative restaurants may be far away. Fuel whenever sensible, carry water and avoid ambitious night driving. Travel 2 Namibia can design a southern route as a self-drive holiday or part of a longer guided Namibia tour, with every overnight stop placed for both experience and safety.
