Fish River Lodge sits directly on the western rim of Fish River Canyon, with wide views from its chalets and main building. The surrounding 45000-hectare Canyon Nature Park offers a remote base for walking, cycling, photography and quiet time beside the canyon. Allow time to settle into the landscape rather than treating the lodge as a short roadside stop.
Fish River Lodge on the canyon rim

Canyon-view chalets at Fish River Lodge
Nineteen chalets are spaced along the rim for privacy. The supplied fact sheet describes seven double, ten twin and two family rooms. Standard rooms sleep two, while the family rooms sleep four. Additional camping stretchers can be requested for larger families, subject to arrangements.
Each chalet has a fan, dressing space and a safe. Large windows frame the canyon, and patio chairs provide somewhere to pause outside. Bathrooms include indoor and outdoor showers. Guests can also ask staff to make up an outdoor bed for a night under the stars. Confirm your preferred sleeping arrangement when enquiring.
Dining and facilities
The main lodge has a restaurant, bar, lounge and sundowner deck. A swimming pool offers a place to relax between excursions, and a curio shop and massage room add to the facilities. Book massages at reception and advise dietary needs before arrival.
Choose dinner, bed and breakfast or the FB+ plan, which adds lunch and activities. The rate section explains the seasonal prices and inclusions. Solar power supplies the lodge, so guests should limit high-powered electrical appliances. Tea and coffee facilities are available in the rooms. Wi-Fi reaches the lodge and rooms, although bandwidth is limited; avoid large downloads and updates.
Explore the canyon
Options include a full-day canyon drive, guided rim walks, sundowner drives and e-bike outings. Half-day and full-day canyon hikes operate in the cooler months. Departure times vary with the season, and outings depend on conditions and availability.
The Rim to River hiking packages offer two nights in canyon camps, or three nights combining one lodge night with two camp nights. These guided journeys use Camp Eternity and Camp Edge, with luggage support and meals along the way. Packages run from April to September and require advance booking, a high level of fitness and a doctor’s fitness certificate. Participants must be at least 16; group sizes range from two to eight.
Getting to Fish River Lodge
Access follows the D463 and a signposted final approach of about 19 kilometres. From the B4 turnoff, the fact sheet allows at least two hours for the long gravel section. A 4×4 is recommended, although a high-clearance two-wheel-drive vehicle can make the journey. Drive cautiously and plan to arrive in daylight.
