The Growcery Orange River Camp near Vioolsdrift

The Growcery Orange River Camp sits on the South African bank of the Orange River, approximately 22 kilometres from the Vioolsdrift border post. Green lawns, indigenous shade and vegetable gardens contrast with the rugged Richtersveld mountains. The relaxed setting works well as a border-route stop or a base for a short river adventure.

The camp’s “recycle, reuse, upcycle” approach is visible in its Chic Shacks and informal communal areas. This is deliberately simple, characterful accommodation rather than luxury lodging. Travellers can choose a private or shared campsite, sleep in a compact shack and enjoy freshly prepared food.

Vioolsdrift accommodation in recycled Chic Shacks

Ten Chic Shacks are built from reclaimed materials and each sleeps two guests, giving the camp capacity for up to 20 people in this category. Bedding is supplied, while bathrooms are shared. The stone-and-metal ablutions include spacious showers. Vehicles can be parked near the accommodation.

The shacks are best regarded as an upgrade from camping: quirky, clean and basic. Guests should bring towels and confirm current cooling or refrigeration options. A communal kitchenette and braai area support self-catering, while large trees provide welcome shade. Light sleepers may appreciate earplugs in this sociable camp environment.

Grassed campsites are positioned beneath trees and may be booked privately or shared, depending on the selected option. Campers use communal ablutions, washing points and cooking spaces. Electricity is available in the communal kitchen rather than necessarily at every site, so vehicle and charging requirements should be checked.

Garden produce supports the camp’s fresh daily meals. Guests can order the meal of the day or cook over their own fire in designated areas. Bring normal camping equipment, drinking water for onward travel and secure food storage. The river is close, so children require constant supervision.

Activities from this Orange River camp

Half-day, full-day and multi-day rafting experiences introduce the river’s birdlife, rock formations and desert scenery. Longer trips combine paddling with simple riverside meals and outdoor sleeping. Guided hiking and four-wheel-drive routes may also explore the Richtersveld, depending on conditions and operator schedules.

Water levels, wind and heat influence every excursion. Guests should disclose swimming ability and medical concerns, use supplied safety equipment and protect themselves from sun exposure. The official Richtersveld National Park page provides useful regional context.

Planning a Growcery Orange River Camp stay

Allow one night for a route stop or two to three nights when adding a river trip. The final access road is gravel, so obtain current directions and avoid arriving after dark. Border opening times and travel documentation must be checked independently before departure.

Pack towels, insect repellent, sun protection, swimming clothing, closed shoes and a warm layer for winter evenings. A dry bag protects phones and cameras during paddling trips. Cashless services and connectivity can change, though Wi-Fi is available. Guests continuing into Namibia should buy provisions and refuel before relying on remote onward stops. Travel 2 Namibia can confirm the right Vioolsdrift accommodation, meal plan, campsite requirements and river activity before incorporating the camp into a cross-border itinerary.
