A 20-day Namibia self-drive safari from desert to river

This 20-day Namibia self-drive safari is made for travellers who want to experience the country in depth. The circular route begins and ends in Windhoek. In between, it links the towering dunes of Sossusvlei, the Atlantic coast, remote Damaraland and Kaokoland, the Kunene River and the wildlife of Etosha.

Twenty days give you room to breathe. Instead of rushing between highlights, you spend several nights in key regions. You can explore Swakopmund’s adventures, follow desert roads towards Palmwag, experience the palms and waterfalls at Epupa, and dedicate four nights to the Etosha area.

We arrange your accommodation, airport transfers and route information. Therefore, you can enjoy the independence of self-driving with the reassurance of a carefully planned itinerary and local support from our Swakopmund office.

Ultimate Namibia self-drive safari highlights

  • Begin with a comfortable night in Windhoek before setting out.
  • Break the journey south with a quiet stay around Namib Grens.
  • Explore Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon over two nights.
  • Spend three nights in Swakopmund for coastal, desert and marine activities.
  • Travel into the dramatic mountains and dry riverbeds around Palmwag.
  • Follow the Kunene north to Epupa Falls and experience Namibia’s remote northwest.
  • Journey via Ruacana towards four rewarding nights in the Etosha region.
  • Finish with two nights at a private game reserve before returning to Windhoek.

The route combines famous attractions with long, beautiful stretches of open country. It also introduces several distinct environments, from dune fields and foggy coastline to mopane woodland and riverine forest.

A grand road trip with expert planning

This journey suits confident independent travellers who enjoy driving and want more than a short highlights loop. Daily distances vary. Some remote sections also require early starts, careful fuel planning and attention to road conditions.

Before departure, we provide a route map, accommodation contacts and detailed travel information. In addition, our Swakopmund office offers support for questions that arise while you are on the road. Your vehicle is not included, although we can help you select a rental that suits the route and your comfort requirements.

The extended itinerary is especially rewarding for couples, friends and repeat visitors. First-time visitors can also enjoy it if they are comfortable with gravel roads and longer driving days. Browse our other Namibia self-drive safari routes if you would like to compare trip lengths.

Why choose twenty days?

A longer holiday creates space for both activity and rest. For example, three nights in Swakopmund let you add an excursion without sacrificing a relaxed day. Four nights around Etosha allow you to explore different sections of the park instead of repeating the same route.

Pre-booked lodges across Namibia

The package uses lodge accommodation booked on a bed-and-breakfast basis. Properties are selected for their location, comfort level and availability. Depending on your confirmed plan, options may include The Weinberg Hotel in Windhoek, Desert Quiver Camp near Sossusvlei, Strand Hotel Swakopmund, Palmwag Lodge, Omarunga Epupa-Falls Camp and a property from the Onguma accommodation collection.

Breakfast is included each day as stated in the itinerary. Most lodges offer dinner, while lunch stops remain flexible on travel days. You can also request lunch packs from selected lodges. Please confirm dinner arrangements with each property or ask us to include them in your quotation.

Tell us about dietary requirements before booking. We will pass this information to the selected properties and confirm available options.

Tour Schedule for 20 Day Ultimate Namibia Self Drive Safari

Day Route and experience Meals Overnight
Day 1

Arrive in Windhoek

Meet your transfer at the airport and travel into Windhoek. Alternatively, collect your rental vehicle and drive to the city. The first afternoon is deliberately relaxed, giving you time to check in, recover from your flight and prepare for the road ahead.

Depending on your chosen comfort level, your stay may include The Weinberg Hotel or a suitable alternative.

Bed and breakfast Windhoek
Day 2

Windhoek to Namib Grens

Leave the capital and travel south-west towards the escarpment. This shorter first driving day helps you settle into the vehicle and Namibia’s road conditions. As the city falls away, broad views, rocky hills and open farmland set the tone for the journey.

Arrive with time to relax and enjoy the quiet setting before continuing towards the Namib the following morning.

Breakfast Namib Grens
Days 3–4

Namib Grens to Sossusvlei and Sesriem

Continue into the Namib Desert for a two-night stay near Sesriem. An early start on the second morning gives you cooler conditions and beautiful light along the dune corridor. Explore Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, then return towards Sesriem Canyon.

A stay such as Desert Quiver Camp provides a convenient base, subject to availability. Optional experiences may include a guided nature drive or hot-air balloon flight.

Breakfast each day Sesriem area (2 nights)
Days 5–7

Sossusvlei to Swakopmund

Travel north via Solitaire and cross the changing landscapes around the Gaub and Kuiseb passes. Near Walvis Bay, you may pause at the lagoon before following the coast to Swakopmund.

Three nights give you two full days to relax and explore. Choose a Sandwich Harbour tour, the Welwitschia and Moon Landscape experience, a city tour, a marine cruise or an adventure activity.

Accommodation may include Strand Hotel Swakopmund or another confirmed property.

Breakfast each day Swakopmund (3 nights)
Days 8–9

Swakopmund to Palmwag

Leave the coast and travel into the rugged landscapes of Damaraland and Kaokoland. The route shifts from coastal plains to rocky mountains and dry river valleys.

Use your full day around Palmwag to rest or join a guided nature activity. The wider region supports desert-adapted wildlife, although sightings depend on conditions and can never be guaranteed.

Breakfast each day Palmwag area (2 nights)
Days 10–12

Palmwag to the Kunene River and Epupa Falls

Travel deeper into Namibia’s remote northwest towards the Kunene River. Opuwo is an important point for fuel and supplies before the road continues north.

Two full days near Epupa create time to enjoy the palms, river scenery and cascades. You may add a guided walk or cultural experience arranged through a responsible local operator. Always follow local advice near the fast-flowing river.

Breakfast each day Kunene River and Epupa Falls area (3 nights)
Day 13

Epupa Falls to Ruacana

Follow the Kunene corridor east towards Ruacana. Riverine vegetation contrasts sharply with the arid country travelled earlier in the safari. The day also positions you for the journey towards Etosha.

Allow plenty of time, because road conditions and seasonal river crossings can affect travel. Refuel whenever the opportunity arises.

Breakfast Ruacana area
Days 14–17

Ruacana to Etosha National Park and Onguma

Dedicate four nights to one of Africa’s most rewarding wildlife destinations. Self-drive routes connect a network of waterholes across the park, so each day can reveal different scenes. Elephants, lions, giraffes, zebra and antelope may all appear, while birdlife adds interest throughout the year.

Split the stay between convenient park access and a property from the Onguma accommodation collection if your confirmed route allows. Guided game drives can be added for a different perspective.

Breakfast each day Etosha and Onguma area (4 nights)
Days 18–19

Etosha to Erindi Private Game Reserve

Travel south for two final nights in a private reserve setting. After the independence of the self-drive route, this is a comfortable place to slow down and enjoy organised wildlife activities.

Your confirmed itinerary will list the selected accommodation and available experiences. Activity times and wildlife sightings depend on local conditions.

Breakfast each day Erindi area (2 nights)
Day 20

Return to Windhoek

Enjoy breakfast before the final drive to Windhoek. Return your rental vehicle or continue to the airport according to your onward arrangements. We will help you plan enough time for comfort stops, refuelling and the rental return process.

Breakfast Tour ends in Windhoek
