Activities & Day Tours on the Namibian Coast

Small-group trips into the dunes, the desert and the Atlantic — led by people who know this stretch of Namibia well.

On the coast

A day out from Swakopmund or Walvis Bay

Most of what you'll find here is day trips — easy to add to a longer Namibia route, or to fill the days while you're based on the coast. Groups stay small, usually a handful of people rather than a full bus, and the guides are locals who've spent years reading this landscape and clearly like sharing it.

There's a lot within a short drive. In one morning you can watch a fog-basking beetle collect its water on a dune, stand where the sand walls of the Namib drop straight into the surf at Sandwich Harbour, or cruise past a colony of Cape fur seals at Pelican Point. Afternoons suit the Moon Landscape and the Welwitschia — a plant that was already centuries old long before this coast had a name on any map.

What's on offer

What you can get up to

Sandwich Harbour by 4x4

Our signature coastal run. A 4x4 takes you down the beach and over the dunes to the place where the desert meets the Atlantic head-on. Keep it to a half-day, stretch it into a full day with Pelican Point and lunch, or time it for sunrise or sunset.

The Moon Landscape & Welwitschia

Inland from Swakopmund, the Swakop River has carved the desert into ridges and hollows that really do look lunar. It's also where you'll meet the Welwitschia — a low, sprawling plant that lives more than a thousand years on fog alone.

The Living Dunes

The sand looks empty until someone who knows it shows you otherwise. This walk tracks the Namib's 'Little Five' — gecko, sidewinder, shovel-snouted lizard, toktokkie beetle and chameleon — and ends with a short drive over the dunes.

Seals, seabirds & town

Rather be on the water? A boat from Walvis Bay gets you close to the seals, pelicans and dolphins at Pelican Point. On land, the Swakopmund city tour walks you through its German-era streets and the neighbourhoods beyond them.
