Set sail from the Walvis Bay Waterfront on an educational morning catamaran cruise in search of Namibia’s Marine Big Five: whales, dolphins, Mola mola, leatherback turtles and Cape fur seals. Each day on the Atlantic is different, with abundant seabirds and the possibility of memorable marine encounters.
Morning Itinerary
- 08:30 – Check-in: Meet at the waterfront jetty. Sailing begins between 08:45 and 09:00, with hot coffee or tea served as the catamaran leaves the harbour.
- 09:30 – Pelican Point: Pass the oyster farms and stop near the lighthouse and a large resident Cape fur seal colony.
- 10:00 – Open water: Search for bottlenose, Heaviside’s and dusky dolphins, along with Mola mola and leatherback turtles when conditions and luck allow.
- 10:30 – Seasonal whales: From July to November, look for migrating humpback and southern right whales. Other whale species have occasionally appeared.
- 11:30 – Atlantic feast: On the return through the bay, enjoy fresh Namibian oysters, sparkling wine, savoury snacks, sweet pastries, local beer, soft drinks and water.
- 12:30 – Return: Arrive back at the Walvis Bay Waterfront.
Wildlife and Birdlife
Regular sightings can include Cape fur seals, bottlenose dolphins, Heaviside’s dolphins and dusky dolphins. Pelicans, Cape cormorants, kelp gulls and Hartlaub’s gulls are among the characteristic birds. Whales, Mola mola and leatherback turtles remain wild encounters and cannot be guaranteed.
