Grootberg Lodge stands on the rim of the Etendeka Plateau, overlooking the Klip River Valley in Damaraland. Stone-and-thatch chalets follow the edge of the plateau, while the main lodge opens onto broad views of the surrounding mountains. It is a rewarding stop between Etosha, the Skeleton Coast and Namibia’s coastal towns.
Community-owned Grootberg Lodge
The lodge belongs to the ≠Khoadi-//Hôas Conservancy, placing community ownership at the heart of the stay. Tourism supports employment and conservation in a landscape shared by people and free-ranging wildlife. Stone chalets above the valley
Grootberg has sixteen chalets built from natural stone beneath thatched roofs. The fact sheet describes eight twin, four double, two triple and two family chalets. Each has a small private deck where you can sit quietly and watch the changing light across the valley.
The rooms offer a comfortable base after a day outdoors, with bathrooms and furnishings that suit the natural setting. Let us know your party size and preferred bed arrangement when enquiring, particularly for family or triple accommodation. The published tariff groups standard rooms and family rooms separately, so the final room allocation should match your booking requirements.
Dining, decks and pool
The main building combines lounge seating, a restaurant and a bar. Its long veranda faces the Klip River Valley, giving guests plenty of space to enjoy the view over a meal or drink. On a lower level, the swimming pool and loungers provide another place to unwind; request pool towels from reception.
Accommodation rates include dinner and breakfast, while lunch and drinks cost extra. Wi-Fi is available in the main building. The lodge uses solar power and emphasises water conservation, an important consideration in this dry environment. Between activities, the decks offer a simple opportunity to rest and enjoy the setting.
Wildlife and cultural experiences
Guided excursions include desert-elephant tracking, black-rhino tracking, sundowner drives and a Damara cultural visit. These outings introduce the conservancy’s landscapes and the work of local guides and trackers. Animals move freely, so sightings depend on conditions and cannot be guaranteed.
Allow a two-night stay for the rhino-tracking excursion. The Moringa guided walk is bookable only after arrival, while cultural visits operate on weekday mornings. Activities carry additional charges and require at least two guests. Ask reception about departure times and suitable clothing, as arrangements change between summer and winter. Bring appropriate footwear and sun protection for time outdoors.
Reaching Grootberg Lodge
The lodge lies on the C40 gravel route, approximately 97 kilometres from Kamanjab and 25 kilometres from Palmwag. The supplier advises a 4×4 for this route. Allow enough driving time for gravel-road conditions and arrange your journey to reach the lodge in daylight.
Palmwag is the nearest listed airstrip, and transfers are available at an additional charge. Drone flying is prohibited in the area. If combining Grootberg with Etosha National Park, leave time for both the journey and the conservancy activities.
