Sesriem Campsite inside Namib-Naukluft Park

Sesriem Campsite is positioned just inside the park entrance near Sesriem Canyon and the road to Sossusvlei. Its greatest practical advantage is location: resident guests can begin the journey towards the dunes according to the camp’s internal gate schedule, before the external park entrance opens to day visitors.

This is straightforward desert camping beneath camel-thorn trees, not a serviced lodge. The setting places campers close to Sossusvlei, Deadvlei, Elim Dune and the canyon while retaining access to a shop and fuel station at Sesriem.

Sesriem camping accommodation and site facilities

Current official information lists 44 campsites accommodating up to eight people, plus six overflow sites. Standard sites are spaced around the camp and many have natural shade. Shared ablution blocks provide toilets and showers. Exact site facilities, power availability and shade differ, so guests should confirm the booked category rather than assume every pitch is identical.

Bring all camping and cooking equipment, sturdy pegs, lighting and warm bedding. Overflow sites may be more exposed. Food must be secured, rubbish placed in the correct bins and water used sparingly. A respectful noise level is especially important because many campers leave before sunrise.

Facilities for Sossusvlei camping

A filling station and small shop provide essential supplies, although stock and fuel availability can fluctuate in this remote area. The broader camp complex has commonly included a restaurant, bar and swimming pool; current access and opening times should be confirmed at check-in. Do not rely on mobile connectivity.

Purchase groceries before reaching Sesriem and carry sufficient drinking water. Summer heat is extreme, while winter nights and dawn departures can be very cold. Keep shoes and a torch available after dark, and supervise children around the pool, roads and unfenced desert environment.

Exploring from camping inside Namib-Naukluft Park

The road towards Sossusvlei passes Elim Dune and Dune 45 before reaching the four-wheel-drive section near the pans. Travellers without suitable experience should use the authorised shuttle for the final sand. Deadvlei’s dark camel-thorn skeletons and towering dunes are best visited before the hottest part of the day.

Sesriem Canyon is approximately one kilometre long and reaches notable depths. Conditions after rain must be respected. Guided drives and shuttles may be available. For current resort information, consult Namibia Wildlife Resorts information.

Planning a Sesriem Campsite stay

Reserve well in advance and allow at least two nights: one for a full dune excursion and another for the canyon or Elim Dune. Confirm internal gate times on arrival because they vary seasonally. Drive cautiously on gravel roads and never rush to meet sunset deadlines. Return with enough daylight to locate your site and prepare dinner safely.

Pack sun protection, layers, a headlamp, closed shoes, tyre equipment and extra water. A small cooler helps with early breakfast, and dustproof bags protect electronics. The park permit and campsite booking are separate operational requirements unless stated otherwise. Keep printed or downloaded confirmation documents available because connectivity may fail. Travel 2 Namibia can secure appropriate Sesriem camping accommodation, coordinate adjacent lodging and explain the practical route to Sossusvlei.
