Bushman’s Desert Camp near Solitaire

Bushman’s Desert Camp, also known as Sossus-on-Foot, is a small desert stay on Farm Cha-re. It lies beside the C14, about 33 kilometres north of Solitaire. The open landscape includes plains, sandstone formations, mountains and dunes on the edge of the wider Namib.

This is simple, informal accommodation for travellers who value space and self-catering independence. The camp also provides a useful stop between central Namibia and the Namib Sand Sea region.

Farm Cha-re was formerly used for Karakul sheep farming. Its varied terrain now allows guests to see several Namib environments in one place, including dry riverbeds, canyons, rocky ridges and open plains. The scale is broad and quiet rather than resort-like.

Sossus-on-Foot rooms and campsites

The property has 12 rustic en-suite self-catering rooms. Room layouts include twin, double and triple options. Each unit has bedding, a private veranda, shaded parking, a solar-heated shower and basic cooking equipment. A kettle, gas burner, crockery, cutlery, pots and a private barbecue area make uncomplicated meals possible.

Camping is also available for guests travelling with their own equipment. Ask us to confirm the most suitable option for your vehicle and group.

Large windows and sliding doors keep the desert visible from the rooms. There is no conventional kitchen inside each unit; instead, guests use the supplied gas burner, kettle and barbecue equipment on the veranda. Bring groceries and drinking water because the nearest shopping choices are limited.

Facilities at this Namib Desert camp

A small shared swimming pool provides a place to cool down. The central area also has a casual bar. Electricity is available in the rooms, while mobile reception is mainly found near reception. Wi-Fi is not offered, so visitors should plan for an offline stay.

Barbecue packs, firewood and selected simple food items can sometimes be arranged. Because supplies are limited, order them before arrival or shop in advance.

Main-camp sites are spacious, and several can accommodate larger groups. They have barbecue points, kitchen work areas, lights and private toilets, with flush toilets and solar-heated showers in the shared ablution block. Reception provides a place to charge fridges and electronic devices.

Desert activities from Bushman’s Desert Camp

The signature guided desert tour introduces the geology, plants and wildlife of Farm Cha-re. It generally lasts about two hours. Guests can also ask about marked hiking routes and guided or self-drive 4×4 trails. Availability depends on conditions and staffing.

Bring sun protection, closed walking shoes and plenty of drinking water. Temperatures can change quickly between day and night.

More isolated bush campsites are available away from the main area. These offer a flush toilet but no shower, light or power; guests may still use facilities at the main camp. The River Camp is seasonal, whereas the Old Tree Camp can generally operate throughout the year.

Planning your Solitaire desert accommodation

Children aged four and younger generally stay free, while reduced rates may apply from ages five to twelve when sharing with adults. Policies and prices can change, so we will confirm them with your quotation.

The final approach is in a remote area. Refuel when practical and avoid relying on late arrival. Contact Travel 2 Namibia for directions, availability and help fitting this camp into a self-drive itinerary.

The Desert Tour is useful for visitors who want context for an apparently empty landscape. Guides discuss how plants, geology and animals cope with arid conditions. Driving trails require a suitable vehicle, and hiking should be planned for cooler hours rather than the middle of the day.
