Buffalo Tented Camp offers eight self-catering tented suites beside the Okavango River in the Buffalo Core Area of Bwabwata National Park. Woodland, river channels and seasonal floodplains shape this quiet corner of north-eastern Namibia. It suits couples and independent travellers who want a small camp and time to explore at their own pace.
Buffalo Tented Camp in Bwabwata
The camp belongs to the Buffalo Private Collection and works with the Khwe San community. Its setting forms part of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, an important wildlife corridor. Browse our Zambezi and Kavango accommodation to plan a longer journey through the region.
Self-catering tents at Buffalo
Each twin or double tent accommodates two guests. Raised timber decks and large windows bring the surrounding trees into view, while a private bathroom provides a shower and toilet. These are furnished tents, so you can enjoy a canvas safari stay without carrying your own camping equipment.
The open-deck kitchenette has a fridge-freezer, gas hob, double sink and basic utensils. Meanwhile, an outdoor dining area makes meals easy to arrange around your day’s plans. In addition, a private lawn and boma-style fire pit provide space for an evening braai. For hot water, the camp uses wood-fired geysers.
Facilities at Buffalo Tented Camp
Stays are on a self-catering basis. Bring your groceries and drinks so you can prepare breakfast before a drive and return for a relaxed lunch. Together, the kitchenette and braai facilities are central to the experience, especially for travellers who prefer flexible mealtimes.
The supplier lists Wi-Fi and free parking. However, mobile signal in the park is limited, so download maps before setting out. Ask us to confirm any particular connectivity needs before booking. You can also compare other private camps in Namibia when choosing your route.
Explore the Buffalo Core Area
Self-drive outings follow designated tracks through mopane woodland and open floodplains. Elephant, buffalo, sable and roan occur here, alongside predators and varied birdlife. However, sightings depend on natural movements and conditions. Therefore, bring binoculars and allow time for the smaller details as well as larger animals.
Alternatively, book guided game drives and Okavango boat trips at an extra cost, subject to availability and conditions. The Khwe Living Museum near the entrance introduces visitors to local knowledge and traditions. For a different wildlife outing, visit Mahango across the river with a separate park permit. Birdwatchers can look for river and woodland species; carmine bee-eater colonies are seasonal.
Plan your Buffalo Tented Camp stay
Reach the camp from the B8 via the D3430 in Kavango East. Divundu is the nearby service town. Because the park has deep sandy tracks, the supplier strongly recommends a 4×4. Confirm access conditions before departure, fuel up beforehand and carry water and a spare tyre.
Before entering, obtain your park permits. Day visits run from sunrise to sunset; stay on marked roads and observe gate times. The camp is unfenced. Therefore, children need constant adult supervision, guests must request staff escorts after dark, and river access requires a guide because dangerous wildlife is present.
